A delightful edition of William Thomas Beckford's classic Gothic novel, with notes both 'critical and explanatory'. From the Slater's 1/- series of novels.'Vathek', first published in 1786, capitalised on the Orientalism that was sweeping across Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and combines discussions of oriental cultures with the tropes of the gothic novel.Beckford originally wrote this novel in French, and it was translated by his friend the Rev Samuel Henley, who contributed to the critical and explanatory notes. With the bookplate of Allan Maxey Galer to the front pastedown. In a half morocco binding, with paper covered boards. Significant rubbing to joints and board perimeters, with minor closed tears to leather of back strip tail. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned due to paper type, with only the odd spot. Very Good.
