Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

Hardcover, no dust jacket, xii + 163 pages. Ex-college library, stamped withdrawn, book looks uncirculated. Interior is clean, bright, untanned, with unmarked text and sharp corners, firmly bound. A library label inside front board, an author info pasted on first blank endpaper, remnants of erased pencil inventory marks on first couple of pages, non-sticky yellow glue stain on last blank endpaper (from a removed label), a pocket inside rear board. Outer page edges are clean and unstamped. Boards with noticeably rubbed upper and lower edges, a small rubbed area in lower outer corner of the front panel, one tiny scuff-mark on side spine-edge. Lower spine shows a moderate sticker-damage and a cancelled inventory label. -- A critical anthology that explores the perspectives of Russian émigré writers on Western society, with a focus on the cultural and ideological differences between East and West. The essays provide a deep analysis of Russian literary and cultural responses to the West, particularly focusing on themes such as exile, identity, displacement, and the critique of Western values from the standpoint of individuals who have experienced both Soviet and post-Soviet realities. The anthology includes examinations of works by notable Russian émigrés, such as Joseph Brodsky, Vasily Aksyonov, Eduard Limonov, and Aleksandr Zinoviev, providing insights into their experiences of exile, the cultural clash between East and West, and their literary depictions of Western life. Through various literary lenses, the book also delves into the portrayal of Western society in Soviet criticism and how émigré writers reflected on their homeland after experiencing life in exile. The collection offers a compelling examination of how these writers navigated issues of belonging, cultural identity, and their complex relationships with the West. The volume will be particularly valuable to students of Russian literature, émigré studies, and cross-cultural analysis. -- Contents: Introduction; 1. Sick Ideas of a Sick Society: The West-East Theme in Soviet and Émigré Criticism / Galina Belaia; 2. The Hero in Search of an Author / Zinovii Zinik; 3. The authors include several well-known writers such as Aksenov, Gladilin, Zinik and Loseff as well as Soviet and Western scholars, and the result is both varied and surprising: in the light it throws on the Russian mentality, on the phenomenon of exile and on aspects of the West. It will interest students of contemporary literature, of the Soviet mentality, and of exile in general.". …
