Review:

Shulamith Hareven's short stories, set in and around contemporary Jerusalem, are mesmerizing; her ability to bring the reader into the lives and worlds of her characters is powerful and rewarding. "Twilight" takes place in a dream/nightmare world where the impossible seems probable: "In that one night's year I met a man, married, became pregnant, and gave birth to a murky child who grew fast, all without light." In "Loneliness" we feel the depth of Dolly's isolation, a refugee with a past she can't fully remember and needs she cannot express. Out of this loneliness a passionate temptation arises: "A current of rare flame shot through Dolly's body and, with it, an indistinct fear." In "A Matter of Identity" we meet a woman who is "one of those women whose body is not important because her actual presence means more than her shape." Shulamith Hareven's stories create psychological tension and evoke a genuine concern for her characters, and Jerusalem, an ancient walled city with roofed alleys, newly constructed buildings, and many refugees, provides a fitting backdrop for the many lives she represents. -- For great reviews of books for girls, check out Let's Hear It for the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers 2-14. -- From 500 Great Books by Women; review by Holly Smith
