Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Einband etwas berieben, leicht bestoßen, allgemein leicht vergilbt, insgesamt guter Zustand / Binding somewhat rubbed, slighty scuffed, generaly slightly yellowed, in total in good condition. - PREFACE The favorable response to Twenty Questions: an Introduction to Philosophy provided us with the impetus to continue to bring philosophy into conversation with other intellectual traditions and activities. The format of the second edition is the same as that of the first. We have included new material, principally in order to bring a greater range of perspectives to bear on the questions that we raise. We have a new chapter devoted entirely to race and racism, and we have endeavored, with greater success than before, to integrate issues of gender, race, and ethnicity throughout the book. We have also deleted selections in response to suggestions from students and teachers throughout the country. On another, but perhaps equally important note, we have made the book more readable by enlarging the typeface. In our experience using this text, and talking with others (both instructors and students) who have used it, we have discovered that good students browse through it, reading selections that have not been assigned. We regard this as a significant measure of our success. Accordingly, we urge students to range freely through the readings gathered here. Philosophy is a field that typically (although not always) responds well to different views about what is philosophically engaging. Many people have contributed to the process of putting this edition together. We thank our research assistants Abigail Severance (Hampshire College), Alice Finke and Sonja Al-Sofi (Mount Holyoke College), and Janet Sepasi (University of Texas); our secretaries/administrative assistants Anna May Dion (Mount Holyoke College), Lenore Bowen and Ruth Hammen (Hampshire College). Colleagues and friends have offered helpful suggestions and some have even done crucial legwork: David Goldberg, Bob Gooding-Williams, Becky Michaels, Kathy Higgins, Nicky Weinstock. Finally, we are indebted to a number of remarkable people at Harcourt Brace Jov- anovich, but particularly to Bill McLane, who urged us to bring out a second edition, to Eleanor Garner who rendered invaluable assistance in securing permissions, to Chris Nelson, who began the editing, and especially to Leslie Leland, who accomplished with unusual grace the unenviable task of taking over editing responsibilities in midstream. Finally, we thank David Tatom, who also took over in the middle of the project, and who embodied the highest virtue of a Senior Editor the virtue of listening to the authors.
