From the introduction: "This second series, DLB 128, covers poets who wrote mostly in the second half of the century. Italian poetry after 1945 reflected the profound changes undergone by Italian culture, including those caused by attempts at reconstruction after the end of the destructive conflict that brought down the Fascist regime. All the major Italian journals - starting with the Politecnico (1945-1947), edited by Elio Vittorini - expressed the necessity felt by Italian intellectuals for a new type of culture, capable of transforming human existence. Interest in communicating and in dealing with current problems of an ethical and sociopolitical nature overcame the earlier literary tendency toward fragmentary and hermetic monologues. Thus all apolitical and escapist poetry was severely criticized because it suggested a lack of moral and historical responsibility or, worse, a complacent attitude toward Fascism. Yet new poetry often showed an excess of good intentions and was marred by a propensity for populism."
