Artikelbeschreibung vom Verkäufer

Hardcover, bound in terra-cotta cloth with black borders and decoration, gold lettering on the cover and spine. This copy is a lit threadbare at the hinges and the board-edges, but everything is still holding together. Two small handwritten library stickers on the spine, one of which is faded nearly to the color of the cloth. Bookplate on the inside front cover from the Silas Bronson Library in Waterbury Conn, with handwritten accession date of Feb 17, 1876. Large 'withdrawn' stamp on the half title page. Title page dated 1875. Library embossed oval on the title page. Frontispiece engraving with tissue guard. A few library markings on back of title page, in pencil. 334 pages. Illustrated. Large folding map of Madagascar at the rear is still attached, but previous owners have struggled to open and close it; there are a couple torn folds and a small section (a few square inches) that is crinkled rather than folded. A single leaf of publisher's ads, and a couple more Withdrawn stamps in the margins of that final advert page. This volume comes from the collection of Dr. Thomas Lovejoy, who was a passionate book collector as well as a renowned biologist. His collection recently came to auction near Washington DC, as we were fortunate to purchase a portion of it, which we're proud to offer here. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it s an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book. Oversized and overweight books will require extra shipping for safe delivery. This copy does not have Lovejoy's name in it, but we provide a card with provenance for purchaser.

We trust them & we hope you will too. If you need tracking, please consider PRIORITY SHIPPING. We ship orders valued at more than $50 in a box, at no additional charge. Priority mailing is for a Flat-Rate envelope, with tracking included. If the book does not fit into a flat rate envelope, we will likely need to request extra shipping costs from you, in order to put it in a box. We only charge the actual amount of shipping, so we hope you'll understand that it's just a matter of getting the book to you without taking a loss on it -- shipping is a service we happily offer without a 'handling' charge.... but we can't afford to charge you less than the cost of the stamps!
