Über diesen Titel

Book by Lamb, David

From Publishers Weekly:

A young man struggles to survive the adverse influences of Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in this coming-of-age tale with a religious motif. Following the suicide of his older brother, Chris's mother plunges him into after-school programs to keep him out of trouble. At first a reluctant student, Chris soon comes to revere his trumpet teacher, Hassan. Under his guidance, Chris discovers jazz and Islam. He converts to Islam, changes his name to Jibril and resolves to live by his religion and his music. Although Islam keeps Jibril out of the drug trade that destroys his friends, he has trouble reconciling his growing sexual desire with the religion's dictates on sexual restraint. Despite a promising premise and Lamb's good ear for African American speech, the novel has neither the thematic complexity nor characters rounded enough to lift it above the level of hackneyed propaganda, and Lamb's (Do Platanos Go Wit' Collard Greens? ) forced jazz references never pay off.
