Über diesen Titel

Inhaltsangabe:

Mr. Smith, a world-famous big game hunter, makes an expedition to an uncharted island and is surprised when the colorful creatures on the island refuse to leave with him.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 1-- An adventure/fantasy with a message that never quite gels. As the animals on Paradise Island watch television, they learn that a famous hunter, Mr. Smith, is on his way. Then, "They spent their time thinking of ways to welcome him." He is "welcomed," or rather terrorized, by them; he is chased by a lion, dumped into a river by a hippo, and hauled up to the top of a palm tree by an elephant. At last, he leaves. Backovsky is obviously talented, and he has the germ of an idea here. There are similarities to Daniel Pinkwater's work, both in the direct manner of storytelling and in the vivid, boldly outlined illustrations. But Pinkwater's bizarre plots are much more interesting than this simplistic story; and, unlike his fresh and friendly looking characters, Backovsky's have a flat and somewhat grotesque look. If you need a book with a theme of not messing with animals or with "Paradise," try Burningham's Hey! Get Off Our Train (Crown, 1990) or Cherry's The Great Kapok Tree (HBJ, 1990). --Lauralyn Persson, Wilmette Public Library, IL
