In Treasures Old and New Gail Ramshaw brings new life to forty primary images from the readings of the three-year lectionary, which is now in use in a variety of forms across the churches. After a thorough introduction to the use and understanding of images, see grounds each of the forty images with excerpts from the church liturgy and song and from the writings of the church's mothers and fathers. Within each chapter see explores the primary image in light of its biblical context, extrabiblical connections, place in the church's tradition relationships to the liturgical year, related images, poetic nuances, and contemporary usefulness.
Treasures Old and New is the fruit of many years of reflection on language and worship a sweeping summation of the author's work to date as a teacher, scholar and advocate for the church's worship. Family grounded in biblical scholarship, filled with practical insights for the pulpit and classroom as lively and vivid in style as the images she treats, this volume is a richly veined mine for those who study, preach, and teach, as well as those who seek a literate devotional companion to the readings proclaimed in worship.

Gail Ramshaw is professor of religion at LaSalle University in Philadelphia.
