Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

In 4 Volumes. First and only Edition. As is mostly the case with this set, it LACKS VOLUME 5, THE ATLAS, which contains three Tableaux illustrating the contrast effects of colours placed side by side and 16 Plates of the machinery used in fabric printing. (This seller is currently offering on Abebooks the full 5 Volume set including the Atlas). Vol 1: Ix, 569pp; Vol 2: 558pp; Vol 3: 458pp and 32 pp of publisher's advertisements at the end; Vol 4: 560 pp. 165 Figures in the text. Published with 429 fabric samples mounted in Vols 2, 3 and 4. One sample on p.480, Vol 4 has been removed, damaging the page. Bound in original publisher's quarter-calf over maroon pebbled boards, spine elaborately gilt, worn in parts. Covers and corners worn with use. Some strike-over of colour on to facing pages. Otherwise Good. This was the first large-scale, comprehensive work to be produced on dyes, dyeing and calico printing since the books of Bancroft (1794, revised 2nd Edition1813). Persoz (1805-1868), a chemist and Professor in the School of Pharmacy at Strasbourg, presented this work to the Societe d'Encouragement pour l'lndustrie Nationale (founded 1802), which awarded him a cash prize and a medal (see the citation at the end of Vol 1) and more importantly they agreed to publish it and gave out copies as prizes to people in the industry, which took it up enthusiastically. The work is based on the use of natural dyes,10 years before the first synthetic dye, mauveine, was made serendipitously by W.H Perkin while trying to synthesise quinine. The first volume describes the different available dyes and technical aspects of colouring and chemistry. The following three volumes include: dye recipes for printing on cotton and wool, instructions for both printing and post-print finishing, and the resulting bright printed fabric samples produced from these by "the principal calico printers in England, Scotland, Alsace, Switzerland, Normandy and Paris". This set of books is the most referred to in William Morris's Printer's Notes. George Seurat, the pointillist painter, was an early admirer of Persoz's work on colour together with the works of Chevreul (1786-1889) on contrast and harmony of colours and the optical effects of placing colours side-by side. Although this set lacks the Atlas volume, because of the tipped-in samples it is still an indispensible work on colour theory, natural dyes and their practical application in calico printing. One of Edelstein's "Thirteen Key Books on Dyeing and Bleaching Before 1856". He describes it as a classic work on textile printing which "details for practically all processes for a variety of styles and colours. Book 0834 (including the Atlas) in Ron Bibliotecha Tinctoria. The 4 Volumes show the state of the art in all its complexities just before the introduction of coal-tar colours". A GOOD 4 Volume set of this work. The set weighs 3kg (6.6lbs). Postage quotation on request. Size: 8.25 x 5.25. …
