Training Translators

A translator should produce a reliable and cohesive translation, and this can be reached only by knowing the competencies needed and the strategies to be applied. Comprehending the concepts of denotative, pragmatic and linguistic meanings of lexical units and recognising translation shifts necessary to make the translation obey the rules of the target language are of great importance. Would-be translators should be taught not only the lexical-semantic systems but also the grammatical ones; therefore, it is necessary to discuss the importance of the systematic approach towards developing the linguistic awareness of would-be translators. However, the fulfilment of any task related to translation or linguistic research, which is an integral part of translation studies, depends not only on the linguistic awareness of a student and his/her knowledge of the source and target languages but also on their willingness to self-study and improve their competencies. This book introduces the basics of translation and provides some insights into the issues relevant while training translators.
