Thukydides

Students of history at the beginning of their study of Greek language and history will be able to draw the most benefit from this introduction. (Antonis Tsakmakis, Gnomon 81/2009) With a single, yet unfinished work, the Athens Thucydides (approx. 460-396 BC) historiographical standards. His portrayal of the Peloponnesian War between the Greek great powers Athens and Sparta is considered a classic of scientific historiography. Consciously focusing on the political and military events, he set out to search for laws in the course of history, with the stated goal of providing posterity a "possession forever". The present book offers, based on the current state of research, a compressed presentation and analysis of the life, work and effect of the famous historian. Particular attention is given to the in-depth interpretation of individual passages, which are suitable for documenting essential aspects in the historical-political thinking of the Thucydide.
