The three plays in this volume admirably display the range and variety of Restoration Comedy. The Way of the World is the supreme example of the comedy of manners; in complete contrast to the glittering wit and satire of Congreve's 'artificial' comedy. There is the kindly realistic comedy of 'The Beaux Strategem' as the representative of the boisterous, rollicking farces so popular with Restoration audiences. There is 'The Country Wife', which can still hold its own as one of the best farces of the English language. What these three plays have in common is exhilarating gaiety and high spirits. Thus begins this introduction by Norman Marshall, well known as a producer and writer on the theatre. An astounding collection that will have any reader rolling in the aisles to this very day.
