Cats are always listening, which is rather the trouble. Faerie did not set out to have three cats. She didn't want even one. She is a dog person-which is something you are allowed to be even when living with three cats. In a creaky old house, beside a climbing rose that cannot decide whether to eat the house or give it an enormous hug, there live Todd, who is fourteen, a gentleman and dresses the part; Kevin, who is enormous and beautiful and has never met a box he didn't like; and Richard, who is the smallest, the sweetest, and the one who is always exploring. Across seven illustrated stories, three bells are bought for the wrong cat, a kitten crosses several states by air, a monograph is written on the box, and a guest arrives who leaves a mark. These are bedtime stories, written to be read aloud, one an evening. Children will find them funny. Grown-ups may notice something quieter underneath and want a moment to themselves before turning out the light.

Kate O'Neil is a Seattle writer, playwright, and artist whose work has appeared in Cruising World and Latitudes & Attitudes. She also writes The AI Reframe on Substack and runs PeepsCookbook.com, which is exactly what it sounds like. Three Cats and Faerie is her first book, and Todd, Kevin, and Richard are entirely real.
