Inhaltsangabe: Thomas Norton can be numbered among the universal men of the England of Queen Elizabeth I ? those who combined action with literary, intellectual and artistic accomplishment. Norton was a scholar, poet and translator, the author of racy polemical pamphlets, and the co?author of Gorboduc, the first black verse tragedy in England. He was at the same time an active Protestant religious reformer and an ardent anti?Catholic: indeed during his lifetime he acquired a certain notoriety as "Rackmaster Norton", who interrogated Catholics under torture in order to uncover actual or intended treason. Sometimes his enthusiams landed him in trouble, including a spell in the Tower. But Norton?s most important claim to fame is perhaps as the first great English "Parliament Man". This new biography is the first to make extensive use of Norton?s own speeches, letters, pamphlets, white papers and other writings. Through a vivid evocation of the cares, concerns, successes and disappointments of one man, Michael Graves give a unique insight into the Elizabethan Age, into the life of Parliament, of London, and of religion in a time of change, fear, hope and intrigue.
Rezension: "Thomas Norton is well?served by Graves, whose work not only fleshes out Norton?s life but leads to an enriched understanding of the age in which he lived.... Recommended." Choice

Anbieterinformationen: We have been selling academic and scholarly books in Cambridge since 1996. Today we occupy an old warehouse on Coldhams Road, adjacent to the railway tracks leading to Ely, not too far from the airport. The site is called Restwell House. We are an internet bookshop, but visitors are very welcome. Some drop off a few boxes of unwanted books, some pick up a book to save on the postage, some just drop by to get to know us, or want to take advantage of the many bargains on our wooden shelves bookshop, which is distinct from the internet stock offered on the web. Our mission has always been to find new homes for the books we are looking after. If we cannot sell them online, we offer them at very low prices to our visitors. We try to give you a serious and dedicated service which is focussed on the individuality of each single book: its condition, its origin, sometimes even its smell. You come to us for real books, not just instances of ISBNs.
