Chapter One

The Morning After

The morning after my total hip replacement, I lay on my bed with my leg in a sling. I was in excruciating pain. I asked the Lord what did all this mean and He said, "Just call yourself Sister Job and consider Joni Erikson Tada."

Joni is a young lady who has been in a wheelchair since she was 17 years old and has struggled with depression because of her condition. She dove into a lake and broke her neck which has caused her to be paralyzed.

Nevertheless, Joni did not let her handicap stifle her. She yielded it up to God. She has gone places with her handicap. She has written many books and painted pictures with a paint brush in her mouth. She even has her own radio program. She is often seen on television. Joni learned to praise God in her situation and allowed God to cause it to work out for her good because she loved Him.

Before I had my surgery, I was quite apprehensive about it. I told the Lord I didn't want to have another surgery. I asked Him to please heal me supernaturally. He said, "No." For what He had to teach me I must go this way.

My body was wracked with pain. The nurses did what they could to make me comfortable. My surgery was scheduled for Friday, December 5th, 1997. Saturday they took me out of bed and put me in a chair for a few hours. That went very well.

Sunday, after the church service was over, my room was crowded with the saints from the church. You have never seen so many flowers in one room. They lavished me with love.

Monday morning the physical therapist took me for therapy. I walked all the way around the room with the help of the therapist and a walker. My doctors talked about sending me to the Wilmington Hospital to teach me how to walk again, but the therapist told the doctors and the nurse that I didn't need rehabilitation because I was doing so well. My doctor came to me and asked me "What are you doing running around in that therapy room?" They told me to slow down and they did want me to have seven to eight days in the rehabilitation facility.

The hospital agreed to send me to the rehabilitation facility and I was there for eight days. I had physical therapy twice a day and they really worked me hard. I had occupational therapy once a day and that went very well also. I was sent home with a visiting nurse, physical therapist, and an aide to assist me in getting on my feet.

On Christmas Eve, the day after I came home, I started to have chest pains. My family called for an ambulance and they came in and checked my blood pressure and my heart. Then they took me to the hospital. They kept me overnight and sent me home on Christmas Day.

I praised God for that because I was able to take my walker and walk into the living room where the rest of the family was. I sat with my leg propped up. Having all my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren around me, the day went well. It was a Merry Christmas after all.

While I was in the hospital, they didn't find anything wrong with my heart, but I continued to be short of breath. I was sent to Philadelphia to see a lung specialist at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. They didn't find anything major. He just suggested that I try doing some exercises like lifting cans out of the cabinet and putting them back in. He said that should build my muscles in my chest. This lasted for quite a while.

Chapter Two

Glenda Gets Married

My daughter Glenda was engaged to be married and she feared I would not be alive to see her walk down the aisle. God was shaping my life all the time.

Glenda's wedding was scheduled for July 18th, 1998. Praise God that when that great day came I was in attendance! I had my grandsons Jeremy, and Devon push me half the way down the aisle in a wheel chair. They assisted me out of the wheel chair and I walked the rest of the way with my cane and Jeremy's assistance.

The wedding was beautiful and comical. Glenda was a beautiful bride and Lyn (Roosevelt Lyn Colvin) was a handsome groom. Glenda had her four sisters, Joyce, Jacki, Gissele, Linda, her niece, Tekoa, her first cousin Geynelle and her best friend Sarah in her wedding party. Her twin sister Linda was her matron of honor and Geynelle, who introduced her to Lyn, was her maid of honor.

Lyn had his brother Marcus as his best man, his younger brother and several friends were his groomsmen and ushers. Lyn's parents, Rev. Roosevelt and Mrs. Laverne Colvin as well as his maternal grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Henry were also in attendance.

Yes, Lyn married my girl and moved her away to Texas. My husband went along with them to help them drive the trailer. Glenda had accumulated quite a bit of furniture and had her own car. Lyn and Glenda flew my husband back home.

I was still back home recuperating. God has been good to me. He has blessed me and brought me from a mighty long way. All of which I give Him all the praise.

As I stated in my first book, "The Women with Undeveloped Character, Transforming My Life." It always takes me much longer to recuperate than most people. It's because God is continually transforming my life. He is causing His strength to become perfect in my weakness. (2nd Corinthians 12:9c).

After my surgery was over, my daughter Linda re-opened my day care center after a week. She didn't want me to lose my children for she knew it was my life. She helped me for a while and then left me alone with it. I was still short of breath and at times I would be completely out of breath after changing a baby's diaper.

I called my doctor and asked him if I could sign up for disability because I felt I couldn't handle the children any longer. He agreed to fill out the necessary papers and got me started.

Chapter Three

God Changed MY Lifestyle

God stripped me of all of my idols. I was looking through a catalog one day and admiring how beautiful the dresses were. The Lord spoke to me and said that had to stop. I thought I had to walk in a room with a $300 dress on to be accepted as Mrs. James Dixon. That was one of my downfalls; I loved to...
