Explores whether America is vulnerable to terrorism, profiling the world's most notorious terrorists and detailing how we can protect against this threat. By the author of Chemical and Biological Warfare. From School Library Journal:
Grade 7 Up-- An overview of how terrorism has affected America. Landau has produced a well-done book on a timely topic; she even outlines the restrictions the UN Security Council has now imposed on Libya for the Lockerbie bombing. Although focusing mainly on the groups that have threatened the U. S. in : the wake of the Gulf War, she also looks at those most representative of international terrorism. Domestic groups (the Ku Klux Klan and Skinheads) are also profiled. The author details the reasons behind terrorism and some of its common traits, as well as its use of the media. How the Gulf War made terrorism more real to Americans, the effects it has had on daily life, and the outlook for the future are all adroitly handled. Succinct and easy-to-understand, the book will allow those who know little about terrorism to fathom the threat. The bibliography is current, with some information taken from television news programs. The list for further reading includes fairly recent (1983-1991) books and articles, and a list of organizations concerned with terrorism is appended. Meltzer's The Terrorists (HarperCollins, 1983) and Goode's Violence in America (Messner, 1984) do a good job on the history of this subject. Similar but not as current are Hyde and Forsyth's Terrorism (Putnam, 1987) and Harris's The New Terrorism (Messner, 1983; o.p.), which has the same cover photograph as Landau's book. Kronenwetter's The War against Terrorism (Messner, 1989) is more detailed and for a slightly older audience. --Kathryn Havris, Mesa Public Library, AZ
