Mack has taught art history at the University of South Carolina since 1970, where he is a Louise Scudder Professor of Liberal Arts and the William Joseph Todd Professor of the Italian Renaissance. He is the author of Looking at the Renaissance: Essays toward a Contextual Appreciation; Pienza: The Birth of a Renaissance City; and Paper Pleasures: Five Centuries of Drawings and Watercolors. Mack is also coeditor of Frances Lieber and the Culture of the Mind and Like a Sponge Thrown into Water: Francis Lieber's European Travel Journal of 1844-1845.
