On the wild tropical coast of Far North Queensland sits Wanga.

A bakery. A pub. A pharmacy. A general store. A wharf. Cane fields running toward rainforest, and the Coral Sea flashing blue at the end of the main street.

It is the kind of town where everybody knows everybody, nobody throws away anything that still has a story in it, and the Bathory family have lived just outside town for longer than anyone cares to examine too closely.

Then Wanga begins behaving strangely.

A dead man buys diesel from his son’s servo.

A voice comes through the wall of June Vale’s bakery.

A pharmacy printer writes instructions from a woman who has been dead for years.

Old photographs change. Roads lead somewhere they shouldn’t. Children remember things adults have forgotten. And across Wanga, people begin hearing the voices of those they have lost.

At first, every incident has an explanation.

Grief.

Faulty wiring.

Old buildings.

Bad records.

Human memory doing what human memory does.

But as Constable Nina begins placing the stories side by side, coincidence starts developing a pattern. Forgotten roads, old drainage lines, missing people and local folklore begin connecting across generations.

And beneath it all sits the oldest rule in Wanga:

Some things are better left alone.

Because the Bathorys may be the strangest family in town.

They are not necessarily the strangest thing in Wanga.

The People of Wanga is a darkly funny, atmospheric Australian horror novel about grief, memory, small-town loyalty and the stories communities keep long after everyone has forgotten why they began.

Welcome to Wanga.

The locals already know your business.
