Illustrated by the author, whose reputation for portraiture has almost exceeded his fame as a writer, Tales & Legends of the Irish Peasantry caused no little controversy in its time. Lover’s earlier Legends & Stories had achieved such popular success that his tales herein collected were arranged by a publisher with scant regard for their author’s permission. While Lover was aghast, the work proved immensely popular, and stood as tribute to the draw of his writing, particularly in this illustrated form. Not only as entertaining as Lover’s other works, this particular volume represents a piece of literary history, and as such richly deserves its place among the classics.
