She received her BA in Psychology/English from the University of Pennsylvania in 1982. She studied for her first graduate degree in English Literature in 1983 at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 2000 she completed a graduate degree, in Applied Linguistics (Teaching English as a Second Language) at the University of Surrey.
