Sustainable Management Solutions on The Environmental Factors | Responsible for the vulnerable socio-economic status at Ennore creek, Chennai, India

The study area is located in the northern part of Tamil Nadu (latitude 80°18’51.95” E to 80°19’50.46” E and latitude 13°14’ 09.60” N to 13°12’42.31N). Ennore creek lies in the middle of the study area. Ennore Creek is an aperture of the brackish water system into the Bay of Bengal. Polluted water enters the creek through the Buckingham canal which carries the domestic and industrial effluents of the Metropolitan city, continuously polluting the Creek water. There are 14 major industries located in the study area. The industries are mostly chemical based, manufacturing petro-chemicals, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, paints etc. There are two power plants at Ennore, namely, Ennore Thermal Power Plant and North Chennai Thermal Power Plant. The discharge of these industries also continuously polluting the Creek and the study area which is in the proximity of the Ennore Creek is affected through percolation of the contaminated water. Hence, the present comprehensive investigation on the surface water, sediment, groundwater, socio-economic conditions and the management solutions to this fragile zone is imperative in this region.
