A Survey of Attitudes and Actions on Dual Use Research in the Life Sciences: A Collaborative Effort of the National Research Council and the American Association for the Advancement of Science

This report analyzes the results of a 2007 AAAS survey of U.S. life scientists about the potential misuse of legitimate scientific research for malicious purposes, particularly bioterrorism. The survey data demonstrates how respondents perceive the sources of risk to dual use research, the actions some scientists are taking to reduce that risk, and the prospects for accepting community oversight proposals. The survey link was emailed to 10,000 AAAS members with a 16% completed survey response rate. A copy of the questionnaire and a focus group transcript are provided, but no index.
