When the skies darken and the thunder rumbles, if you're like most of us, you're probably quick to grab the TV remote and check the weather. You want to know how bad the coming storm is going to be.

In much of the midwestern United States, that means you're checking in with Gary Lezak. Known as much for his effervescent personality as he is his professional accuracy, Gary is the most trusted and popular weather guru in the region. And he puts his celebrity to good use as well, often through his close relationship with the nonprofit animal welfare organizations Wayside Waifs and the Humane Society. His own pups have all been rescues, bearing names like Stormy, Breezy, and Sunny, and they've become famous in their own right, due to their outreach work in area schools and appearances with Gary on TV! For more than 20 years, children have fallen in love with the antics of Gary and his dogs. In fact, Gary and his dogs have been featured on Animal Planet's K-9 to 5, and the Oprah Winfrey Show during an episode on dogs that work.

Now, Gary brings his meteorological expertise to a new medium -- children's literature. "It's A Sunny Life!" is, as the cover indicates, an adventure for rain or shine. It tells the story of Sunny the Weather Dog, as she becomes separated from Gary, only to use the very same information he uses on-air to avoid hazardous weather and make her way safely back to him.

Also included with this bedtime tale is a special section, "Sunny's Weather Academy," which provides fun answers to all sorts of weather-related questions. What are the different types of clouds? Why does the weather change so quickly sometimes? And, of special interest to parents, in the event of severe weather, what should you and your family do to stay safe?

"It's A Sunny Life!" is as entertaining as it is educational; as full of personality as it's author. It's a great book for kids of all ages!

Gary Lezak is a six-time Emmy Award-winning meteorologist and has two big passions in life - the weather and his dogs. They were both key inspirations for this story.

The chief meteorologist at KSHB-TV (NBC 41 Action News) in Kansas City, he has been bringing the City of Fountains their most accurate weather forecasts for more than two decades. Gary is also a big part of the KSHB.com news information site. He writes a popular weather blog every day for the long-range forecasting site Weather2020.com, and his expertise continues to be a key component in the success of the 1 Weather mobile app - helping make it the most accurate and most downloaded weather app on the market.
