Chapter One
The river began to swell above its banks. It had rained for three days straight and seemed as if it would never stop. We were on higher ground than some and the water hadn't reached our house, but it wasn't far."We should get things ready in case we have to get out of here," Grandpa stated. Grandpa always had a plan and Grandma stood behind him.
"I've already started Poppa," Grandma replied. She always knew what he was planning, but would let it seem to him as if it was all his idea. It was as if she could read his mind.
"Momma get some bags ready; Michael can help with that," Grandpa said. My younger brother, he had turned six not a month ago.
"Junior, let's get to the cages," Grandpa stated.
"Yes sir," I replied. Grandpa had cages of prize rabbits that we had to get to higher ground.
"Where do you want to put them?" I asked.
"On the flat trailer for now," he answered.
"You going to move the trailer down here Grandpa?" I asked.
"Too wet and soft, we would get stuck, so no, we'll have to tote them up there," he answered.
"Okay Grandpa," I replied. I looked to where the trailer was parked. This is impossible I thought, it was a good fifty yards away and I knew those cages were heavy. He had a dozen filled with a couple rabbits each and all their stuff.
"Junior, go get the wheelbarrow," he said, "It'll make things a lot easier on us."
"You're smart Grandpa," I stated.
"Got to use your head boy, not your back," he replied. I had heard him say that many times.
"Get some rope too," he said.
"Yes sir," I replied. With that wheelbarrow it didn't take much time at all.
"Help me stretch this tarp over them," he stated, "the rains starting to pick up." His rabbits were used to their luxury, but would have to rough it tonight. He'd talk to them like they were his babies, and sometimes it seemed as if they understood what he was saying.
"Let's get in until this rain eases up a little," he said.
"Are they going to be all right here Grandpa?" I asked.
"Fine for now, let's get in," he answered.
Running upon the porch and Grandpa not far behind I opened the door. Grandma stated, "Wipe those shoes good or take them off, but don't drag mud in here."
Grandpa said, "Take them off for now and get some dry socks on."
"You'll have to get them from your suit case, they're already packed," Grandma stated.
"Mine too?" Grandpa asked.
"Yours too," she replied.
Following me to my room with a box, she handed it to me. "What's that for?" I asked.
"For some of your things," she stated.
"You really think we'll have to go?" I asked.
Before she could answer Grandpa said, "It's doubtful, but better to be ready just in case." The rain started to fall heavier than I had seen it, and the thunder rumbled in the distance.
"Poppa, better come see the TV," Grandma yelled. Grandpa entered the room never saying a word, his focus beamed straight to the TV. Bad storms were heading our way.
"Will we have to go in the storm pit?" Michael asked.
"Maybe not," Grandma answered.
"I hope not," he said, "I'm scared of that place."
"Don't be afraid, we'll all be in there together," I said.
"That's right, nothing to be afraid of in there," Grandpa replied. Grandma had started to say something when Grandpa interrupted, "Shh, listen, here come the winds, everyone stay in here until this thing passes." All glued to the TV, we could do nothing but wait. I was ten and a half, impatience set in on me quick.
"I wish it would hurry up and do what it's going to do!" I exclaimed.
"Well, hope it don't do anything," Grandma replied.
"I don't mean anything bad Grandma," I said in a snappy voice.
"I know that," she replied.
"Watch the way you talk to your Grandma," Grandpa said.
"Yes sir," I replied. "Sorry Grandma," I added.
"Apology accepted," she said.
"Looks like this rain isn't going to let up for a few days," Grandpa stated.
"What do you want to do Poppa?" Grandma asked.
"Better call Robert and Jeannie before we lose the phones and let them know we may be coming for a visit," he answered. Uncle Robert and Aunt Jeannie lived about three hours away. In the summer Michael and I would stay with them for a few weeks and always enjoyed it. After getting off the phone we started readying last minute things.
"Leave something out to play with on the trip," Grandma stated.
"When did you tell him we would be coming Momma?" Grandpa asked.
"In the morning," she answered. About an hour had gone by and the worst part of the storm had passed over.
"Got to check on the bunnies before going to bed," Grandpa said.
"I'll do it for you," I stated.
"All right boy," he replied, "be sure that tarp is tied down tight."
"Yes sir," I replied.
When getting back in the house Grandpa stated, "We should eat and get some rest."
"I agree," Grandma replied. Tired from the day's activities, they got no argument from Michael or me.
Chapter Two
The next morning the rain was coming down hard. "Wake up Michael," I said."I don't want to get up yet," he stated.
"Better get up before Grandpa gets you up," I remarked. Leaving him to fend for himself, I headed into the kitchen where Grandma was.
"Good morning," she said.
"Good morning," I answered.
"Where's your brother?" she asked.
"He's getting up," I stated. Grandma was preparing breakfast and rattling on about the river and how Grandpa had better get on the stick, if we were going to leave this morning.
Michael walking in, still in his pajamas said, "I can't find my clothes Grandma."
"Look in the bathroom, I left you some in there," she answered.
Grandpa walked in and said, "Got a lot to do this morning, let's get busy."
"First things first, lets eat breakfast," Grandma replied.
"Not much time for that Momma," Grandpa stated.
"Well, had you got on the ball when I first called you, most of it could have been done before breakfast," she replied. Grandpa didn't say anything, though he did let out a little growl.
Michael came in, sat down and rested his head on his hands.
"Good morning Michael," Grandpa said.
"Hey Grandpa," he answered.
"You better sit up in that chair and eat," Grandpa stated. Grandpa was never one to like whining or moping, and wouldn't stand for it from anyone. Of course Michael being the baby could get away with a little more than I could.
We finished eating and then Grandpa gave us the plan of duties he had organized lying in bed last night. I waited on Grandma to put her two cents in, but she said not a word, she just rolled her eyes and walked out.
"All right Junior, lets get going," he said.
"Yes sir, I'm ready," I replied.
"I'll back the car down and hook up the trailer," he said, "you bring things from the house."
Grandma stated, "Wait, I have to waterproof some of it and show you what needs to stay up front." Grandpa headed on out while Grandma gave me the rundown.
"What can I do Grandma?" Michael asked.
"I don't know much you can do," I said sarcastically.
"You can open these bags for me," she answered.
"Yes ma'am," he replied.
After a half hour we had everything loaded. Going through the house to ensure we hadn't...
