Mergers and acquisitions continue to the preferred option for businesses seeking to grow rapidly, and M&A bids announced worldwide in 2000 and 2001 totalled more than $5 trillion. It is commonly stated that the strategic logic behind an M&A is that it will create ?synergies? or result in ?economies of scale?, though in reality part of the reason is just as likely to be CEO boredom or hubris. But the M&A failure rate is high - roughly half fail and the financial gains of even "successful" mergers are often neutral. Why is this the case?
