This major work on the study of liturgy deals extensively with the five major foci of Christian worship: Initiation, the Eucharist, Ordination, the Daily Office, and the Calendar. Its presentation is historical, beginning with Jewish antecedants and then covering the New Testament period, the Patristic, Medieval, and Reformation periods, and ending with contemporary developments in liturgy. A special section on liturgical setting examines in detail the historical importance of music and singing in the liturgy, and the role of hymnody in Christian worship.
