In the actual work of 'herbart Hall the arrangement is that before a pupil is accepted the parents are requested to fill out the Child History blank, eventually with the help of their family or consulting physician. On the basis of these answers it is decided whether or not the child appears to be a suitable pupil. It must be noticed that the work of this Institute is not for mentally defective or feeble-minded chil dren, but for what the author has called atypical cases. Children presenting symptoms so puzzling that more time will be needed for making even an approximate diagnosis, are temporarily accepted into the Observation Clinic of the National Association for the Study and Education of Exceptional Children by which the entire work is main tained. The attached Tentative Classification of Exceptional Children will better explain the author's point of view in grading degrees and kinds of exceptional development.
As soon as a child is accepted, he is given a complete Body Measurement such as Schedule II shows. The blanks provide for twelve such measurements, and are intended to cover an entire calendar year, the measurements to be taken monthly. Together with these measurements other general observations of the body of the child are made and recorded, such as general nutrition and response, motor co-ordination in climbing a chair, condition of feet, etc It is necessary that the children be measured without clothes.
