Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic horror mystery has rightly retained a tight grip on the public imagination since it was first published in 1886. Its combination of masterly storytelling with deeper philosophical investigations into the duality of human nature have assured it of an honoured place in popular culture, literary appreciation and school and university curricula.However, many students and other readers find it difficult fully to enjoy the book, finding its Victorian language and syntax a barrier to understanding. This enables readers to get to grips with the thrilling narrative and vital themes without becoming frustrated by difficulties in comprehension. This edition is in no way intended to be a replacement for Stevenson’s great work; rather it is hoped that having read this text the reader will return with greater confidence to enjoy the original.
