A lively and accessible introduction to American history, Stories of Great Americans for Little Americans presents young readers with memorable accounts of the men and women who helped shape the nation.
Edward Eggleston tells American history through short, clear, story-driven sketches designed for children beginning to learn about the past. Rather than overwhelming readers with dates and abstractions, he focuses on people, actions, character, and consequence. The book includes figures from exploration, settlement, war, invention, public life, and reform, offering portraits meant to awaken curiosity and give young readers a first sense of how individual lives connect to larger historical events.
First published in the nineteenth century, Stories of Great Americans for Little Americans reflects the educational style of its era: direct, moral, patriotic, and built around biography as a gateway to history. For homeschoolers, classical education readers, families, and anyone interested in older children’s history books, Eggleston’s volume remains a useful and readable introduction to American lives, civic memory, and the storytelling tradition of early history education.
About the Author
Edward Eggleston (1837–1902) was an American novelist, historian, Methodist minister, and educator best known for his fiction of regional life and his historical books for young readers. Born in Indiana, Eggleston grew up in the American Midwest, a background that strongly influenced his interest in frontier life, education, language, and the development of American society.
His best-known novel, The Hoosier Schoolmaster, helped establish him as an important figure in American local-color fiction. Eggleston was also deeply interested in making history understandable to children, and he wrote a number of books designed to present the American past through clear narrative and memorable biography. His educational works aimed to make history vivid, moral, and accessible rather than merely factual.
Eggleston’s writing reflects a nineteenth-century belief that young readers could learn history best through stories of character, courage, invention, leadership, and public service. Though his books bear the assumptions of their time, they remain part of the history of American children’s education and historical storytelling, offering a window into how earlier generations introduced young readers to the people and events of the nation’s past.
