Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

4to (29 cm), 594 pp. Publisher's black cloth boards, dust jacket, and slipcase (minor shelf-wear). First volume in an ambitious multi-volume series on the history of science sponsored by Banca Popolare di Milano, planned at one volume per year and explicitly conceived to supersede Maurice Daumas's pioneering but by then dated Les instruments scientifiques aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles (Paris, 1953). Contents include: Paolo Galluzzi, "Premessa"; Gerard L'E. Turner, "Il ruolo degli strumenti nello sviluppo scientifico"; and Gerard L'E. Turner, "Gli strumenti", with sections on astronomy, planetaria, measurement of time, astronomical instruments in the medieval Islamic world, weights and measures, surveying, navigation, calculating instruments, drawing instruments, chemistry, mechanics, hydrostatics, pneumatics, heat, sound, light, optical instruments, meteorology, electricity and magnetism, and the fundamental instruments in the development of modern physics. Specialist contributions include John R. Millburn on planetaria; David A. King on astronomical instrumentation in the medieval Islamic world; Silvio A. Bedini on the manufacture of scientific instruments in America; Gloria Clifton on scientific-instrument production in England; Paolo Brenni on the scientific-instrument industry in France in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; and Helen E. Turner on surgical and medical instruments. The volume closes with a bibliography, a list of museums and collections of scientific instruments, and an index of names, followed by a statement by Piero Schlesinger of Banca Popolare di Milano concerning the bank's cultural sponsorship of the series. A substantial and richly documented survey of the history, manufacture, and scientific uses of instruments from antiquity to the modern period, bringing together contributions from leading specialists and intended as a modern successor to Daumas's classic study. Particularly useful as a reference for the history of scientific instruments, material culture, and the development of experimental science.…
