Staff Development in Academic Libraries: Present Practice and Future Challenges

This is a reworked edition of The Library Association's policy statement on the nature and quality of library provision in colleges. The advice offered is aimed primarily at librarians working in the further education sector, but the principles of strategic and quality management are appropriate throughout the education sector. Based on operational experience and good current practice, the book provides recommendations on levels of service and resourcing. It outlines what is expected of librarians and senior managers in the provision of a good library service committed to the development and management of learning. Guidance is offered on the following subjects: mission, objectives and strategic planning; resourcing and service provision; management of IT for learning; performance indicators and TQM; evaluation and inspection; and marketing the library service.
