Über diesen Titel

Inhaltsangabe:

M City inquires into medium sized European cities through a mix of hematically defined sections (Mapping, Shopping, Migration) and a sampling of six cities, including Basel, Krakow and Trieste. Artists, architects and urban theorists draw richly detailed pictures of profound transformations from core towns to sprawling conturbations, changes of interest to all who are nostalgic for the old city. Includes work from Chris Burden, Dan Graham, Andreas Gursky, and Gerhard Richter.

About the Author:

Chris Burden was born in Boston in 1946, the son of an engineer. Partially trained as an architect, he began to create radical performance body-art works in the late 1960s. Solo exhibitions of his work have been held at the Arts Club of Chicago, the Gagosian Galleries in New York, Beverly Hills, and the Tate Gallery in London. Burden was included in the 48th Venice Biennale and in the 1977, 1989, and 1997 Whitney Biennials. In 2005, Burden set sail his self-navigating, computer-controlled yacht, built with assistance from the Marine Engineering Department of the University of Southampton. Since 1978, Burden has held a professorship in New Media at the University of California, Los Angeles, the city in which he took up residence in 1965.

Sylvie Fleury was born in 1961, in Geneva, where she still lives.

Born in Urbana, Illinois, in 1942, Dan Graham worked as a gallery and art critic before embarking on his artistic career in 1965. Over the years, he has received numerous public commissions in Europe as well as the United States, including the Children's Pavilion (1989), designed in collaboration with Jeff Wall, and the Rooftop Urban Park Project (1991), a permanent sculptural installation on the roof of the Dia Center in New York. He currently lives and works in New York.

Andreas Gursky was born in 1955 in Leipzig, East Germany, and studied at the prestigious Kunstakademie, Dusseldorf. His first solo gallery show was held at Galerie Johnen & Schottle, Cologne, in 1988. A solo museum exhibition followed the next year, at the Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld. By this time, Gursky was increasing the scale of his photographs, and by the 90s was using the largest photographic paper available; by 2000 he was combining sheets to make images larger still. In the early 1990s Gursky began to use digital technology for retouching and altering negatives, and more recently he has produced work entirely fabricated by computer. Gursky has had recent solo exhibitions at Matthew Marks Gallery, New York, and White Cube, London. A major mid-career retrospective traveled the world in 2001, with U.S. stops at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

"Marco de Michelis is a Professor of the history of architecture at the Bauhaus University in Wermar Germany and a scholar at the Getty Center for the History of Arts in Santa Monica, California. He has published extensively about contemporary architecture and his prior books include Luis Barragan (Skira, 2000) and Bauhaus 1919-1933 (Mazzotta, 1996)."
