Often compared to Edgar Allan Poe and Rudyard Kipling, Uruguayan author Horacio Quiroga (1878–1937) was one of Latin America's pioneers of the short story. He spent much of his life in the remote, wild province of Misiones, Argentina. Deeply influenced by this beautiful yet unforgiving jungle, he wrote Cuentos de la selva (1918) to entertain and educate his own children.
