Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor: Thomas Hay Sweet Escott was a journalist and editor who was born in Taunton to Hay Escott of Launton. He earned his B.A. in 1865 and M.A. in 1868 from Queen's College, Oxford. Early in his career, he served as a lecturer in logic at King's College London and later as deputy professor of classical literature. His work as a journalist began in 1866 when he became a leader writer for The Standard. In 1882, he took over as editor of The Fortnightly Review, but a severe health breakdown in 1886 led to his resignation and many years of semi-retirement. After a long period of poor health and inactivity, he resumed writing in 1894, contributing over 100 articles and publishing several books until his death. He was well connected in literary circles, forming friendships with notable figures in literature and history. He was married twice and had three children from his first marriage. His works reflected his deep engagement with English society, politics, and culture, and his writing spanned both journalism and books on national life and character.
