The recent increase in immigration patterns in the United States has meant an increase in the number of children whose first language is not English entering American schools. Some reports indicate that as many as one in four students come from families where the language spoken in the home is not English. Abul Pitre is professor and chair of the Department of Africana Studies at San Francisco State University. He teaches courses such as The Life and Thought of Elijah Muhammad, Hip Hop Workshop, Black Religion, Critical Black Pedagogy, and a wide range of subjects -- including education,?leadership, critical pedagogy, and Nation of Islam Studies.? Pitre has authored, edited, and co-edited 29 books, including several with Rowman & Littlefield.? He is best known for The Educational Philosophy of Elijah Muhammad and A Critical Black Pedagogy Reader: The Brothers Speak. He was on a panel with Dr. Cornel West where he discussed his most recent book, Liberation Pedagogy: Elijah Muhammad and the Art of Soul Crafting.
Alice Duhon-Ross McCallum serves as department head of the MS Higher Education and Adult Learning in the Richard W. Riley College of Education at Walden University. Her current research focuses on multicultural education and counseling with special interest in school violence, family in poverty, and conflict resolution.
