Egypt, enclosed as it is within desert borders and reliant on the River Nile, is in many ways unique, and its geographical isolation has presented a great opportunity for the country to develop along its own lines without outside influence. In ancient times, a strong central government, a "divine king" and religion made Egypt an outstanding civilization. Introducing the reader to different aspects of Egyptian history, and describing the everyday life and religion of its people, this book covers Egypt's fluctuating fortunes during the past 6000 years, including Ancient Egypt, the Ptolemaic period, Muhammad Ali and the present day. The author's numerous publications include "The Blue Guide to Egypt", "Egyptian Legends and Stories" and "Ptolemaic Temples".
