From the grounds of a palace garden, the "Lustgarten, the visitor entered the Old Museum with its collection of Classical sculpture; from there one could pass directly into the New Museum, with its comprehensive exhibition of ancient minor arts. And from the New Museum in turn, a passage gave access to Greek and Roman architecture in the Pergamon Museum, which was named after the great altar from Pergamon that it housed. Divided among the three buildings but all on a single level and joined by passageways, the entire complex enabled the visitor who strolled through the galleries to follow the development of Greek, Roman, Etruscan and Cypriot art. The declared intention of the two museums with collections of Classical antiquities in present-day Berlin - the Antikenmuseum in Charlottenburg and the Pergamon Museum - is now to bring their holdings together again and to exhibit them in a new, comprehensive exhibition integ- rated with the other archaeological col- lections on Museum Island with its rich tradition, taking up the old conception of the museum which had evolved over a century.
