A Short Account of the Life and Writings of Robert Barclay by Joseph Gurney Bevan is a concise biographical and intellectual portrait of Robert Barclay (1648-1690), the influential Scottish Quaker theologian and apologist. Bevan, an English Quaker writer and apologist himself, outlines Barclay's early life, his embrace of Quakerism, and his development as a formidable defender of Friends' doctrines in the seventeenth century. The book traces Barclay's major theological contributions-most notably his Apology for the True Christian Divinity, which articulated Quaker beliefs regarding the Inner Light and the primacy of spiritual experience-while situating his work within the broader context of contemporary religious debates and controversies. Bevan also covers Barclay's personal qualities and ministerial labors, portraying him as both a devout believer and a thoughtful writer whose works helped define early Quaker theology. While concise, the account emphasizes Barclay's enduring legacy in the Society of Friends and the wider Christian intellectual tradition, offering readers insight into his doctrinal commitments and the historical significance of his writings.
