Stephen W.F. Berwick’s 10th book gives his fans more stories from the land of the shapeshifter. Although the spirits dwell everywhere, their favorite abode is the mountains where they have lived since the beginning. In “Shadows Across the Land of the Dawn,” short stories and poems flesh out the everyday lives, cultural heroes and landscape of the Penagok (Penacook) peoples of central New Hampshire. As in the previous eight volumes of the Shapeshifter series, my purpose in writing “Shadows Across the Land of the Dawn” has not been to reduce the importance of or replace traditional Abenaki oral history, teachings, or traditions that do exist, and of which I’ve become aware, but to shift their shapes to give new depth and understanding.  My goal has also been to fill in where gaps of knowledge exist and to suggest possibilities that may or may not have been previously considered.   Additionally, as a descendant of Indigenous and European settler blood, some of my stories are my attempt to reconnect with that heritage.  I hope that you will enjoy!
