This book is a collection of essays which I wrote mostly in college, and poetry I mostly wrote as a child. I was someone who was a functional illiterate most of my life. I learned how to read at the age of 30. I always wanted to be a writer, and when I wrote the poetry as a child, I had to have others do the spell check because of all my learning disabilities, but somehow, I seemed to write in a very well-structured meter. My hope is to help others who have suffered from suicidal depression and other mental illnesses such as I have. I’ve tried to kill myself more times than I can count. A lot of it was for attention, but there were times I meant it and I just wouldn’t die. I have a scar on my neck that I show to others who are struggling. That scar can be very helpful sometimes for others who are suffering. It blends in quite well with my razor burn. That was the second time I spent a month in a psych-ward and is why I got put on SSDI. I didn’t get denied once. I have seen doctors my whole life, and most couldn’t help me. I have eight disorders with my brain, and I don’t fit one stereotype, but the essays in this book are about my struggles, and I show how even though people told me I was unique, I have a lot in common with everyone. I want to see who I can help with what I have learned. I agree with the Buddha: suffering is a universal principle of all life. My hope is to help others who have suffered, especially from such things as abuse and mental illness and suicidal depression. This book starts how I truly was in my childhood and early adult life, which was miserable, suicidal, and hopeless. This ends with how I am doing today, which is wonderful. I developed some techniques of jnana yoga, which has led to my happiness that I want to share with other people. So, if you decided to go on this journey of reading this book, it might be painful and difficult at first, but the reward is what my life turns into and the solutions I have discovered along the way. I have also noticed the solution to my life is to understand myself, and now I want to take that self-knowledge to help and love as many people as I can.The reason this book is called “The Shadowed Soul” is because that was the name of the book of poetry I wrote as a kid, and the cover was drawn by my girlfriend Heather Woods I had at Discovery Academy. I published the first edition before I was able to reconnect with Heather, but now she is back in my life and I am grateful for that.
