My second year of the war is an early 20th century World War I account that documents the evolving conditions of the conflict during its second year. It is important for its firsthand journalistic perspective on military strategy, leadership challenges, and the human experience of modern industrial warfare. The narrative follows Palmer as he returns to London and reflects on the contrast between American perceptions of the war and the realities unfolding in Europe. He observes how the scale of conflict demands massive recruitment efforts and increasingly complex coordination among Allied forces. Moving closer to the front, Palmer describes the British Army's adaptation to prolonged warfare, including changes in organization, leadership structure, and training of new soldiers. He highlights key military figures such as Sir William Robertson and Sir Douglas Haig, while also noting the psychological strain experienced by troops in extended combat. Through observations and personal accounts, the work illustrates both strategic decision-making and the emotional weight carried by those involved in the war. The book stands as a significant example of early war correspondence, combining analysis, observation, and historical reporting of World War I.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Frederick Palmer was born January 29, was an American journalist and writer known for his influential war reporting and long career as a foreign correspondent. He was born in Pleasantville, Pennsylvania, and studied at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Amos F. Palmer, and in 1896 he married Elsie M. Wither. Palmer began his journalism career when he was hired by The New York Press in 1895 as its London correspondent, a position that marked the beginning of his extensive reporting from Europe. Over time, he became one of the most recognized American war correspondents of his era, particularly noted for his coverage of major international conflicts, including World War I. His work is valued for its detailed observations of military operations, political developments, and the human experience of war. By combining firsthand reporting with analytical insight, Palmer helped shape public understanding of modern warfare and the changing nature of international conflict in the early 20th century.
