What if the very place you came to for refuge is the place where your body begins to tremble?

For the devoted practitioner who can bow before the Buddha but freezes before the tea table, A Seat in the Sangha offers a compassionate Buddhist path through the quiet suffering of social anxiety in Dharma centers, meditation halls, retreats, and spiritual communities.

Many sincere seekers love the Dharma in solitude, yet feel unsafe among Dharma friends. They may sit peacefully at home, but become tense when entering a meditation hall. They may long for Sangha, yet avoid conversation after practice. They may understand compassion as a teaching, but still feel ashamed of their own trembling body, hesitant voice, and longing to belong.

Rooted in the Buddha’s formation of the first monastic community and his instructions on harmony, this reverent guide reframes the Five Precepts as living shelters for embodied belonging. The precepts become more than moral rules; they become gentle supports for protecting the anxious body, taking one’s rightful seat, honoring sacred boundaries, speaking with truth and kindness, and returning through sober repair when shame or conflict arises.

With a wise, grounded storyteller’s voice, A Seat in the Sangha walks readers from the doorway of the Dharma hall into the shared field of community. Through Buddhist reflection, parabolic teaching, mindfulness verses, and practical micro-practices, it helps spiritual people meet comparison, silence, projection, awkwardness, and fear with compassion rather than self-judgment.

This is not a book about becoming impressive in spiritual spaces. It is a book about becoming safely present.

The Sangha was never meant to be a stage for perfection. It was meant to be a field of refuge where imperfect beings return, breathe, bow, repair, and share the path.

If you have ever loved the Dharma but feared the circle of those practicing beside you, open this book and take your seat.
