Beschreibung

Cloth, 8vo, 26 cm, xiv, 271 pp, ills, facs. "This exciting journey into the world of William Shakespeare unlocks new doors and reveals fresh and startling facts about the poet and the age he lived in. In 1983, the world's foremost handwriting expert, Charles Hamilton, stumbled on a three-page document in the poet's script - his handwritten will. Previously considered the work of a lawyer or clerk, the will was skilfully matched by Hamilton to the six known signatures of Shakespeare. This dramatic discovery led him in search of further documents and in this fascinating book he describes how he tracked down, examined, compared and authenticated whole new pages of Shakespeare's handwriting. In Search of Shakespeare has numerous surprises, all of them based on handwriting: Was Shakespeare murdered? Hamilton thinks he was; Did Shakespeare write Bacon's essays? Hamilton has discovered several manuscript essays by Francis Bacon with corrections and additions in Shakespeare's hand. These are only two of the fascinating disclosures in this breakthrough into the mysteries of Shakespeare's life and work." - from the blurb. Very Good in Very Good dustwrapper. Über diesen Titel

From Library Journal:

Hamilton, a manuscript dealer and collector, embarks upon an old-fashioned excursion into "literary detectivism" in his latest book. Hamilton uses his experience with penmanship and documents to glean biographical "discoveries" (Shakespeare was a lawyer; he was murdered by his daughter Judith and her husband Thomas Quincy; he served as secretary or assistant to Francis Bacon and may have written Bacon's Essays ; etc.). These speculations rest unsteadily upon dangerous and ill-supported assumptions; Hamilton never footnotes, and his reading relies overmuch on obscure and outdated criticism. There are numerous, interesting illustrations, but the captions sometimes misrepresent the picture and are infected with the same sloppy scholarship which damages the text.
