Can a Black child change her skin color to white by scrubbing it with soap and water?

This was the hurtful suggestion made by Jessie, who is white, to Ariana, who is Black, in a real-life incident at a preschool. “If you scrub your hands with soap and water, you can be white like me,” Jessie told Ariana.

What began as a painful moment for Ariana and her family became a powerful lesson in identity, self-worth, belonging, Black beauty, and the beauty of diversity.
