The turbulent and dramatic history of Scotland's castles, including Edinburgh, Balmoral, and Cawdor Castle, and castles still venerated by members of clans such as Castle Campbell

Scotland's castles reflect the turbulent history of Scotland and its many conflicts and skirmishes, whether against invaders from the north or the English to the south. Castle building reflected the dual needs to control a population and protect against rebellion and invaders. They have provided the setting for some of the most dramatic deeds in history throughout war and political conflict, and of course without the strategic and psychological effect of castles the Feudal system would have been impossible. This well researched and beautifully illustrated book explores the story of Scotland's castles, featuring many vivid tales from history and showcasing a wide range of examples of Scotland's incredible wealth of castles, along with a glossary, timelines, and list of castles.
