For more than four decades, polarized politics in America has been driven by a vicious scandal machine comprised of partisan politicians and a sensationalist media. In this long awaited book, Lanny Davis, Special Counsel to the Clinton White House, examines historical scandals such as Thomas Jefferson's extramarital affairs and the unrivalled Watergate to explain how we have reached this sorry state. The same political culture is evident worldwide and Davis demonstrates how this poisonous atmosphere is damaging not just politics but society as a whole. He also offers hope by revealing how a coalition of centrist politicians focusing on core policies that appeal to the frustrated electorate marooned in the middle can pull us back from the brink.

LANNY DAVIS served as Special Counsel to President Bill Clinton from 1996-98 and was on the Democratic National Committee from Maryland from 1980-1992. In 2005, President Bush appointed Mr. Davis to serve on the five-member Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board. He is a frequent guest on The O'Reilly Factor, Hannity & Colmes, MSNBC and CNN, and his writings have appeared in The New York Times. He is a partner in the Washington DC office of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe and author of Truth to Tell: Notes from My White House Education (Free Press, 1999).
