Zustand: Sehr gut. XIX, 296 D. Einband leicht berieben. Knick im Rückendeckel. - Text engl. und span. - Between 1914 and 1947, hundreds of American artists traveled to Mexico to work. Some lived in the country for only a few short weeks or months, while others remained permanently. Their biographies form a microcosm of American society in the first half of the twentieth century. Some were born in major American cities, others came from towns and villages in rural areas from the Deep South to New England. Many were immigrants: Yasuo Kuniyoshi from Japan; Winold Reiss and Josef Albers from Germany; Octavio Medellin from Mexico; Anton Bruehl and Ambrose Patterson from Australia. The artistic forces that had shaped them were as varied as their backgrounds. While some had studied in Europe or in the major art academies of the United States, others were largely self-taught, taking only occasional classes when finances allowed. They wielded styles and media of great diversity, and range from members of the Ashcan School and social realists to New Deal photographers and the future abstract expressionists.
