[Osaka 1787, Kawachiya]. Blue stiff wrs.,4 vol. set bound in 5, 56+48+49+59+72 double folded leaves, 568p. in all, 25+34+ 32+33+43 woodcuts, hand printed on Washi paper, a bit of old minor worming vol .3 & 5, else solid, complete.FIRST EDITION . *** **** *** . . . SHUI MIYAKO MEISHO ZUE: PART 2, The Supplement . . . COMPLETE SET OF 4 VOLUMES BOUND IN 5 . . . SUPERB EDO PERIOD GENRE GUIDE TO THE FAMOUS KYOTO SIGHTS . . . TEMPLES, SHRINES, BUDDHIST TEMPLES, GARDENS, MOUNTAINS, . . . FESTIVALS, CULTURE, FASHION AND CUSTOMS OF THE PEOPLE . * THIS IS PART 2 ONLY: This item is the complete supplement to MIYAKO MEISHO ZHU, issued in Osaka, 1787, commonly known as Part 2, 4 volumes bound in 5 [also sometimes called vols. 7-11]. . Profusely illustrated with 21 full-page & 147 double-pages, including illustrations showing Hollanders in Kyoto. . See volume 2 [2nd part], [double-leaves 7] and our illus05.jpg for a photo of the three Hollanders posted to our website. . They are at rest most likely at a Japanese Ryokan [inn], along the Tokaido [Eastern seaboard] Highway. They are being entertained, and eating a meal. . It appears there are at least two or three Samurai 'minders' accompanying them along the journey, which was highly 'supervised' by Shogunate military Samurai. . It is interesting to note that the Dutch arrived in Japan in 1600, soon after established a trading post on the small attached but separate island of Deshima in the Nagasaki harbor. Annually the Shogun called a small representative group of them to Edo for observation and entertainment. Surely this group was either on the way or returning on one of these annual events sanctioned by the Shogun. Otherwise the Dutch were isolated from the Japanese mainland and forbidden entry to Japan upon death by the Shogun. . *** An excellent guide to Kyoto and environs NOT discussed or illustrated in Part 1. . See our listing for Part 1 on our website, which is NOT included here with part 2. Sold separately as our book # 220253. . PART 1 is a 4 volume set bound in 5 volumes as: Volumes: 1, 2 [in 2 parts], 3, 4. All profusely illustrated with 21 full-page & 147 double-pages, all woodblock printed on Washi [handmade] mulberry paper. . *** THE AUTHOR: Akizato [active 1776-1830] was a prolific author of the period and wrote several important other similar Meisho [guides to famous places] titles during this period. His texts accompany the graphics. He was a Haiku poet and garden architect. He wrote PART 1 as well. . *** THE ILLUSTRATOR: This work was illustrated by TAKEHARA Shunchosai Nobushige [active 1772-1801], he illustrated PART 1 as well. The illustrations in Part 2: 21 full-page & 147 double-pages . It is a superb guide to the famous sights and architectural monuments. It covers famous places in Kyoto the ancient capital, shrines, residents, palaces, Buddhist temples and other famous and historic places are drawn from a distant or close-up and in much detail. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** REFERENCES: . H. Kerlen. CATALOGUE OF PRE-MEIJI JAPANESE BOOKS, p.454-456, #1066, this exact supplemental edition, dated Tenmei 7 [1787] the First & Only Edition. He also cites 4 other examples of this same edition on pp.455. .
