Excerpt from Russia in the Summer of 1914: With Discussion of Her Pressing Problems
Late in the afternoon we passed the island of Sveaborg, famous for the valiant defence its Rus sian garrison made when attacked in 1855 by the English and French fleets combined. One thousand tons of shot and shell were hurled by the English fleet alone upon the island, but the fortress was impregnable and the allied fleets were forced to withdraw without accomplishing their purpose.
