Late in the afternoon we passed the island of Sveaborg, famous for the valiant defence its Rus sian garrison made when attacked in 1855 by the English and French ﬂeets combined. One thousand tons of shot and shell were hurled by the English ﬂeet alone upon the island, but the fortress was impregnable and the allied ﬂeets were forced to withdraw without accomplishing their purpose.
